Devon blog

Last week, we decided to book a couple of days in Devon. On December 6th, Derek and I drove to Paignton to start our break and visited his brother and wife for a few hours.

A foggy journey down the M5 saw us arrive around lunchtime.

Neither Mike and Audrey are in the best of health so were delighted to see us. We were soon joined by Mike and Audrey's son, Glenn and his partner Jackie. A very enjoyable time was had by all reminiscing and updating each other about various topics. All too soon, it was time to leave and make our way to Beeches B and B where we were staying overnight. A lovely house tastefully decorated and run by Merrick and Paige. Do take a look at the website.

Derek and I were the only guests, so had the undivided attention of Merrick!

Derek's niece Lynn and her husband Phil joined us for an evening meal at The Ship in Paignton. We haven't seen each other properly for a few years so it was nice to have their company for a few hours.

Our bedroom at Beeches was spacious and comfortable, our only criticism was the endless squawking of the seagulls from about 4am onwards!!

Derek opted for the full English!

Breakfast was delicious. I opted for cereals, fruit, yogurt and toast. Derek had the Full Monty and just about managed to eat it all. Merrick is an excellent chef!

Looking out over Paignton Bay

We left around 10am and after a stroll along the beach, drove to Exeter where we met my son Matt and my sister for lunch. It was Matt's birthday on 7th December, so I arranged to treat us all to a special lunch at Rendezvous, Exeter.

The place was buzzing with people enjoying a glass or two of wine, along with eating various types of food. Some were having the Christmas menu which looked great. Rendezvous has a lovely atmosphere and very good service from the members of staff.

Charcuterie board

We started off with a Charcuterie and Matt certainly took no time at all in eating his share of cold meat, freshly baked bread and condiments!

My cod dish was excellent!

Matt then chose Brixham brill & scallop with thyme polenta, fennel, cauliflower, tapenade, brown shrimps & capers, Margaret and I had roast fillet of Brixham cod with root vegetable purée, pak choi, samphire, & hazelnut beurre blanc and Derek roast pork belly with hogs pudding, rösti potato, spiced red cabbage, and cider sauce. All of us agreed the main courses were delicious and certainly different to what we normally eat on a weekday!!

Banana and chocolate mousse

Who wanted dessert? Three out of four of us did!  Earl Grey Creme Brulee for Matt and me, Chocolate mousse and banana ice cream for Margaret. I haven't seen Matt since August, so it was good to talk and catch up.

The Christmas Market is in the centre of Exeter so we walked around the many and varied stalls. Matt gave Derek and I some money as Christmas presents and invited us to buy some goods from the market. I chose a pendant, some VERY special nougat and some alcoholic ginger beer and Derek chose a range of chutneys made locally in Devon. Looks like a Christmas made in Devon!

Soon it was time to say goodbye and head back to Hereford.

We had a lovely time eating, drinking and chatting and I probably need to go on a pre Christmas diet now!!
